A Three-dimensional flow analysis of the transportation elements in an intermeshing co-rotating self-cleaning twin screw extruder was carried out using the finite element method. In the present paper, two types of self-cleaning twin screws were used for simulation in order to observe the influence of the screw configurations. The velocity profile, transportation flow rate, leakage flow rate and maximum shear stress profile have been compared for both types of screws. The maximum shear stress history, residence time distribution and deformation history for the fluid elements have been discussed using the numerical results of the tracer experiment. The results suggest that the transportation capacity is higher in the stronger self-cleaning twin screw than in the weaker self-cleaning twin screw. The stronger self-cleaning twin screw has a narrower residence time distribution which is difficult to be affected by the back pressure gradient.
