Reactive processing is an effective technique for the modification of polymers.
In this paper we describe the modification of the mechanical properties, the thermal stability and the chemical resistance of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PETP) by crosslinking in the extruder. This modification can also be performed by crosslinking between PETP and polyamide 6 or polyamide 66 in the extruder. The crosslinking agents, acid dianhydride and diglycydyl terephthalate, were compounded with potassium carbonate anhydride used as a catalyst.
It was found that the extruded resins were improved in tensile strength, heat resistance and chemical resistance.
