Phenolic-based composites for automotive frictional materials contain a variety of inorganic fillers and modifiers in addition to the combination of the base resin and fibers (mostly asbestos). The frictional behavior under low speed conditions cannot provide sufficient foundation for the prediction of friction and wear behavior at high speed because the temperature rise causes chemical changes in some frictional constituents of the composite system.
The purpose of this paper is to enable a clear interpretation of the high speed friction performance using a simple material system which contains pitch-based carbon fibers. It has been shown that the frictional behavior of the composite under the high speed conditions involves three changes in frictional coefficient with sliding distance : an initial decrease, a gradual increase and the final constant friction. Incorporation of the carbon fibers is effective to reduce the frictional coefficient and frictional fluctuations during sliding. The wear rate increased with increasing amount of fibers and there is an optimum, fiber content to minimize the wear rat
