This paper describes experiments in detail to determine the viscoelastic constants of plastics based on short time stress relaxation tests after constant strain rate uniaxal comperession. Initially the selection of stress levels, the range of measuring times and the time recording intervals are discussed. Stress relaxation tests were performed for polymethyl methacrylate [PMMA] and polyethylene [PE] at three initial stress levels. The viscoelastic constants of the 6 P/M(F) model were determined using the procedures described in an earlier report. These obtained constants were then reduced to the constants of the 6 P/K(F) model. The reduced viscoelastic constants of PMMA were compared wiht those obtained by other researchers under various testig method (vibration, impact, creep).
