Three Dimensional Flow Analysis on the Co-rotating Self-cleaning Type Twin Screw Extruder with Double-flight

We have developed a three-dimensional analysis technique for non-Newtonian flow in the melt conveying zone of single-flighted twin screw extruders using the finite element method. In the present study, we extended this simulation technique to double-flighted twin screw extruders of the co-rotating self-cleaning type. We discussed its performance on transporting and mixing in terms of residence time distribution, screw characteristic curve and the maximum shear stress history. The results suggest that the transporting capacity and the mixing efficiency of the twin screw extruders strongly depend on the screw configurations.
