In this paper, the generation mechanism of residual stress in thermoplastic resins under extrusion molding is discussed.
First, the generation mechanism of residual stress under extrusion molding is explained by using a thermoviscoelastic model. Second, three thermoplastic resins, which exhibit different thermoviscoelastic behavior from each other, are selected, and the thermoviscoelastic properties of these resins, which have direct effects upon their residual stresses, are carefully measured. Finally, the residual stresses in extruded plates of these thermoplastic resin as molded, annealed and rapidly cooled are measured accurately by the layer-removal method.
The generation mechanism of residual stress in thermoplastic resins under extrusion molding is clarified by comparing these thermoviscoelastic properties and their residual stresses under various conditions.

Key words: Thermoplastic resin / Residual stress / Extrusion molding / Thermoviscoelastic property
