Continuous Graft-copolymerization of Polymers Using Two-stage Twin Screw Extrusion Reactor System

The combination of a non-intermeshed high speed type twin screw extruder and a single screw extruder has been used for a continuous two-stage graft-copolymerization reactor. A study on direct graft-copolymerization to commercial polymer manufactured with a conventional polymerization process has been carried out using Ethylene-Vinylacetate copolymer-Maleic Anhydride-Styrene monomer composition. As a result, the two-stage twin screw extrusion system has been shown to be useful as the continuous reactor for relatively low concentration grafting polymerization, and to rationalize considerably the manufacturing processes when compared with the conventional polymerization process. Furthermore, by taking into consideration the reaction temperature, reaction time and mechanical operating parameters, it was possible to control the structure of the grafted products and the production capacity for given monomer and initiator formulations.
